Day 4 - A little monster

I was planning on taking the whole weekend off, but I couldn't help designing the audio for this clip. The little orange monster bursting from its egg just to scream was too cute and enticing.
First, I wanted to cover the man and the girl turning, and I tried to make a "whoosh" sound but wasn't happy with the results. So instead, I recorded myself gasping, then lowered the formant a little bit, just so it would sound less like me, and more how I imagined he sounded.
Then, I tackled the egg hatching and breaking, which I just crumpled up some paper, pitched it a little lower, and slowed down the playback speed a bit. That alone worked pretty well.
Lastly, I wanted to make the monster scream, which was a fun approach. I pretty much just made a strange groaning sound into the microphone over and over again until I got one I liked (my wife didn't enjoy any of them while she was on the phone). Then I doubled it,
repitched the copy higher, and then raised the formant on that to boost a little high end since the scream was already fairly low.
Toss some EQ and compression on all of these, add a touch of reverb to a few, and voila!
This was a cute little exercise, that I thoroughly enjoyed making. This is the first one where I used elements of my own voice, which was a fun experiment. The movie that this comes from, "The Sea Beast," is an incredibly well-done movie. I watched it months ago and really enjoyed it.
Anyway, here's the clip! I hope you enjoy it! If you have any clips you'd like to see Sound-designed, leave a comment with the name of the source, and the clip you want done!
